Assault on cop: SC rejects RRR quash petition

In a setback to rebel YSR Congress party MP from Narasapuram parliamentary constituency Kanmuru Raghu Ramakrishna Raju, the Supreme Court on Friday rejected a petition filed by him seeking to quash an assault case against his son Bharat in Hyderabad.

The Supreme Court felt that there was need to dismiss the case, which was still at the FIR stage and no arrests had been made.

“Let the investigation be done. If there are any lapses, the court will interfere,” the court said.

Simultaneously, the Telangana high court, too, dismissed a similar quash petition filed by Bharat on the same grounds. The courts cannot interfere in the cases in the preliminary stages itself, the high court felt.

On July 4, security personnel at Raju’s residence in Hyderabad, along with his son Bharat, allegedly assaulted Farooq Basha, an intelligence police constable from Anantapur, who was posted at Gachibowli as part of security surveillance on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit.

RRR’s son and his security staff thought the constable was conducting a recce at Raju’s residence with a view to attack the MP. Though he told them that he was a constable from the state intelligence department, they roughed him up.

Later, based on the complaint lodged by the constable, the Gachibowli police booked an assault case against Bharat and the security staff. Two of the Central security forces were even suspended from service.

Raju moved the Telangana high court and also the Supreme Court, but both the courts refused to admit his petition and dismiss the cases, as the investigation was still going on.

The rebel YSRC MP had also written a letter to Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao requesting that the Gachibowli police drop the cases.
