RGV Blasts War 2: 'Big Scenes, Zero Connection'

Director Ram Gopal Varma has shared his candid opinion on War 2, starring Jr NTR and Hrithik Roshan, criticizing the film for prioritizing grandeur over realism.

Varma alleged that certain scenes were shot with unnecessary extravagance, distancing the audience instead of drawing them in.

“They are adding heaviness in the name of production value  - top angles, drone shots. Such visuals look great in a trailer, but inside a theatre, the audience cannot emotionally connect with them. These scenes don’t allow viewers to bond with the story,” he said.

Comparing it with Rajamouli’s style, Varma noted, “Rajamouli also makes such scenes, but they always sync with the concept and the required grandeur. Other filmmakers forget their story and, in the name of elevation, create massive visuals that alienate the audience. When you show unnecessary heaviness, the audience loses trust.”

Varma expressed particular dissatisfaction with some action sequences in War 2, especially Hrithik Roshan’s entry fight.

“I had many complaints about that scene. When I asked a key person from the film, the reply was: ‘We added it because it feels new.’ That answer left me speechless,” he remarked.

He warned that illogical, overblown scenes can kill a story.

“If a scene doesn’t demand such heaviness, forcing it in will only destroy the narrative,” he said.

Adding a lighter note, Varma said he sometimes feels like doing YouTube-style reviews of films, much like Paruchuri Brothers’ analysis, but refrains.

“If I did that, many people I know would get hurt. That’s why I don’t do such things,” he clarified.
