Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra (Kotha Lokah in Telugu) is creating waves across India.
The film has been winning rave reviews from audiences and critics alike, with many calling it the best Indian film of 2025 so far.
Featuring cameos by stars like Tovino Thomas, Dulquer Salmaan, and Soubin Shahir, the movie has kickstarted a superhero cinematic universe in Malayalam cinema.
At the box office, the film has been nothing short of spectacular. In its first three days, Lokah Chapter 1 collected ₹14.30 crore net in India and grossed ₹41 crore worldwide.
On its fourth day, early estimates suggested another ₹9 crore net from India. With overseas numbers included, the superhero saga crossed ₹50 crore globally in its opening weekend alone.
Considering its modest budget of ₹30 crore, trade experts predict it could easily surpass ₹100 crore worldwide.
Malayalam cinema, already renowned for delivering some of India’s finest films over the past 10–15 years, is now tasting massive commercial success.
Earlier this year, Prithviraj Sukumaran’s L2: Empuraan starring Mohanlal set records by becoming the highest-grossing Malayalam film ever with ₹265 crore worldwide.
Mohanlal also scored another blockbuster with Thudarum, which collected ₹235 crore globally.
This Onam season has been particularly eventful. Alongside Lokah Chapter 1, two other Malayalam releases hit theatres: Mohanlal and Malavika Mohanan’s Hridayapoorvam (August 28), which opened to positive reviews, and Fahadh Faasil–Kalyani Priyadarshan’s Odum Kuthira Chaadum Kuthira (August 29), which unfortunately met with negative responses.
With Lokah Chapter 1: Chandra’s success, Malayalam cinema has now entered the superhero space with confidence, setting new benchmarks for both creativity and box office power in 2025.
