There has been a growing trend among producers to re-release classic films in 4K or 8K formats, banking on nostalgia and enhanced visuals.
However, most of these re-releases are struggling to recover the investments made in restoration and marketing.
A recent example is Nandamuri Balakrishna’s Aditya 369, which underperformed during its theatrical return.
Now, another iconic film — Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari, starring Chiranjeevi and Sridevi — has met a similar fate. Though its collections were slightly better than Aditya 369, they still fell short of expectations.
The final box office numbers were modest and far from enough to label the re-release a success.
Producer Ashwini Dutt claimed to have invested nearly ₹9 crore for the remastered version.
Even assuming some exaggeration, the actual cost is estimated to be between ₹4–5 crore. Unfortunately, the film's theatrical run failed to recoup those costs.
With an increasing number of older films hitting theaters almost weekly, the re-release market is becoming oversaturated.
Audience fatigue is setting in, and fans appear less inclined to spend on nostalgia-driven screenings.
As a result, most re-releases are ending up as box office disappointments, with only a select few managing to break even or turn a profit.
