A Small Film Making Big Waves in Tamil Nadu

A Small Film Making Big Waves in Tamil Nadu

A low-budget Tamil film with a largely unfamiliar cast (except veteran actress Simran) is suddenly capturing the attention of the Tamil film industry, thanks to strong word-of-mouth buzz. The film in question? Tourist Family.

Despite its modest start — grossing ₹2 crore on Day 1 and dipping slightly to ₹1.7 crore on Day 2 — the film picked up momentum due to positive audience response.

Collections jumped to ₹2.7 crore on Day 3 and an impressive ₹3.75 crore on Day 4. And these figures are just from Tamil Nadu.

So, what’s working for the film?

It’s the compelling blend of comedy and emotion. Tourist Family is the directorial debut of Abhishan Jeevanth, and features Sasikumar in the lead, with Simran and Yogi Babu playing key roles.

The story follows a Sri Lankan Tamil family — led by Dharmadas (Sasikumar), his wife (Simran), and their two sons — who migrate illegally to Tamil Nadu after the economic collapse and COVID crisis in Sri Lanka.

As they try to settle into a new life, they form bonds with locals — until a bomb blast accusation turns their world upside down. The film unfolds as a gripping, emotional dramedy about survival and identity.

Simran gets a powerful comeback role, age-appropriate and far from her typical commercial parts. Sasikumar delivers a grounded performance, while Yogi Babu brings his signature comic flair.

The background score enhances emotional beats without overwhelming the narrative. With a crisp 2-hour runtime, the film stays tight and engaging.

At its core, Tourist Family is a thoughtful take on the struggles of displacement and finding belonging. The director handles this sensitive theme with restraint and insight, making the film both relevant and entertaining.
