This Number Plate Becomes India's Most Expensive

The registration number HR88B8888 has officially become India’s most expensive car number plate, fetching a record ₹1.17 crore in Haryana’s VIP number auction held on Wednesday.

Haryana conducts weekly online auctions for VIP and fancy number plates. Applicants can register their preferred number between 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Monday, after which bidding continues until 5 p.m. Wednesday on the official fancy.parivahan.gov.in portal.

Among all the numbers auctioned this week, HR88B8888 drew the maximum interest, receiving 45 applications.

Starting at a base price of ₹50,000, the bid skyrocketed to ₹1.17 crore by the end of the auction. By noon on Wednesday, the price had already reached ₹88 lakh. Just last week, the number HR22W2222 sold for ₹37.91 lakh.

HR88B8888 is a premium VIP registration number purchased through competitive bidding. ‘HR’ denotes Haryana, ‘88’ refers to the specific RTO or district code, ‘B’ represents the vehicle series, and ‘8888’ is the unique registration number.

The plate’s appeal comes from its distinctive pattern, as the capital letter ‘B’ visually resembles the number 8, giving the appearance of a continuous sequence of eights.

Earlier this year, in April, Kerala tech billionaire Venu Gopalakrishnan made headlines by purchasing the number KL 07 DG 0007 for his Lamborghini Urus Performante at ₹45.99 lakh.

The bidding began at ₹25,000 and rapidly escalated, with the iconic “0007” James Bond reference adding to its exclusivity and prestige.
