It’s not uncommon for people to spend big on fancy number plates to match their expensive vehicles.
These numbers are often seen as a status symbol and sometimes fetch shockingly high prices in auctions. But a recent incident in Himachal Pradesh has taken things to an extreme.
Sanjeev Kumar from Hamirpur bought a scooter for ₹1 lakh. But the number plate he chose — HP21C-0001 — cost him a whopping ₹14 lakh in an online auction.
Naturally, this has sparked a wave of jokes and memes on social media.
While many called it extravagant, others pointed out that such choices are often driven by sentiment, not just prestige.
Interestingly, this isn’t the first such bizarre auction in Himachal Pradesh.
Two years ago, a man named Desh Raj bid a staggering ₹1.12 crore for the number HP99-9999 for his two-wheeler.
However, he failed to pay up after winning the auction. When authorities reached out to the second-highest bidder, he declined as well. The third bidder also backed out.
Since then, the transport department has made it mandatory to deposit 30% of the bid amount in advance to prevent such incidents.
Eventually, that same number plate was awarded to Indra Kalta, who secured it for ₹29.98 lakh.
