An unusual F-1 visa rejection has gone viral after an Indian professional shared his story on Reddit, sparking widespread debate about the US student visa process.
The applicant, who had built a strong career with over four years at Amazon as a senior investigation and risk specialist, applied for a student visa to pursue an MBA in Global Management at City University of Seattle.
However, he said the visa officer denied his application, reportedly remarking, “You’re already successful,” before handing him the rejection slip.
The applicant believes the officer saw his established career as a reason not to study further.
He admitted that his interview answers may not have convincingly shown how the MBA was essential for his career growth in India.
He now plans to reapply, this time highlighting how the degree would help him move into senior leadership roles back home.
In his post, he wrote, “Lesson learned: If you have a stable job and good career progression, you need to show the officer that your current success is only a stepping stone. You must explain how the program is crucial for achieving a higher goal you cannot reach otherwise.”
Visa experts echo this point, noting that applicants must clearly explain how their program aligns with their long-term goals and also demonstrate strong ties to their home country to reassure officers of their intent to return after studies.
The Reddit post drew dozens of reactions. Some users suggested that the choice of university might have affected the officer’s decision.
One commented, “Unless you enroll in a much more reputable school, I don’t think your visa will get approved.”
Another added, “‘You’re already successful’ just means they didn’t believe you were really going to this school to study. Student visas are tough.”
The incident highlights the delicate balance student visa applicants must strike - showing ambition for growth while also proving credibility and genuine intent to study.
