An unexpected visa setback has forced an Indian tech professional to leave a high-paying job in the United States and return home, pushing him into a difficult phase of unemployment and financial stress.
The techie, who was earning nearly $200,000 (around ₹1.8 crore) annually, is now dealing with a ₹40 lakh loan while trying to find a job in India’s highly competitive tech market.
The situation came to light through a Reddit post titled “Forced return to India (H1B not picked). Struggling with brutal tech interviews.”
In the post, the individual explained how missing out on the H-1B lottery changed everything.
“My visa expired, and I didn’t get picked in the H-1B lottery. My US employer doesn’t have an India office, so there was no option for internal transfer or remote work. I had no choice but to pack up and return,” he wrote.
The sudden shift from a stable, high-income role abroad to joblessness in India has created intense financial pressure. With a large loan still pending, the urgency to secure a job has only increased.
He also pointed out the challenges of cracking interviews in India, saying the process feels tougher compared to what he experienced in the US.
“I still have a ₹40 lakh loan. Managing this debt without a job, while facing intense interviews, is really affecting my mental peace,” he shared.
According to him, Indian hiring processes involve deeper technical questioning and higher expectations, leaving him feeling underprepared despite his international work experience.
The post quickly went viral, drawing mixed reactions online. While some users questioned his financial planning, others offered practical advice.
One user commented that with a $200K salary, the loan could have been cleared quickly with disciplined savings.
Another suggested taking a pay cut and focusing on repaying the debt first. Some even shared personal experiences of aggressively clearing loans by cutting expenses and prioritizing financial stability.
The story highlights the uncertainty faced by many professionals dependent on visa systems, where a single lottery result can drastically change careers and life plans overnight.
