Why is BJP silent on Nandyal by-poll?

With the battle for Nandyal by-elections gaining momentum following the commencement of nomination process, two major contenders for the seat –Telugu Desam Party candidate Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy and YSR Congress party candidate Shilpa Mohan Reddy have started mobilising their forces into action.

Among the other parties, the Congress said it would also field its candidate, but as usual it has not finalised the name.

And Rayalaseema Parirakshana Samithi leader Byreddy Rajasekhar Reddy also said he would field one of his followers in Nandyal.

While the Communists remained silent on the contest, Jana Sena Party chief Pawan Kalyan said he would come out a statement on which party he would support.

Surprisingly, there has not been any statement from Bharatiya Janata Party so far. Since it is a political ally of the TDP, one would expect that it would support Brahmanand Reddy. But the BJP has not come out with any statement supporting the TDP candidate till now, at least for the sake of alliance.

What does it indicate? The BJP preferred to remain silent as it is trying to distance itself from the TDP and there are already indications that it might sever its tie-up with the TDP. If it supports Brahmananda Reddy, it would mean the BJP would continue to be an ally of the TDP.

Other reason could be the TDP itself might not have sought the support of the BJP, because Nandyal has large number of Muslim voters and hence any open statement from the BJP in support of the TDP would result in the loss of Muslim support.

So, the TDP would prefer the talk of its separation from the BJP to remain alive in the people so that Muslims would back Brahmanand Reddy!
