Why Can't KCR Back Pro-Telangana Meira?

Why Can't KCR Back Pro-Telangana Meira?

With the opposition parties announcing the candidature of former Lok Sabha speaker Meira Kumar as their candidate for presidential elections, to compete against NDA's Ramnath Kovind, Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao has landed in a tricky situation.

The TRS president was the first person to come out in support of Ramnath Kovind and issued a statement thanking Prime Minister Narendra Modi for heeding to his advice on selecting a Dalit candidate.

But within three days, the UPA also selected Meira Kumar, who is also a Dalit candidate and is daughter of prominent Dalit leader and former deputy prime minister Babu Jagjeevan Ram.

It is a different matter that KCR had given commitment to support the NDA candidate in the Presidential elections, but he also has a moral obligation to support Meira Kumar.

For, she was the Speaker in Lok Sabha when the Andhra Pradesh bifurcation bill granting statehood to Telangana was passed on February 18, 2014.

She was totally committed to Telangana formation so much that she did not even allow voting on the bill as demanded by Seemandhra MPs and ensured that it was passed despite lack of majority in the House.

Had Meira not been so firm on Telangana formation, she would have adjourned the House after the infamous pepper spray incident in Lok Sabha involving then Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal.

But, she went ahead with the passage of the bill by ordering stoppage of live telecast of the House and ordering closure of the Lok Sabha doors, after suspending the agitating MPs.

“But for Meira, Telangana would not have been a reality now. So, it is the moral responsibility of KCR to support her candidature for Presidential poll. But he is more interested in pampering Modi so that his daughter Kavitha would get into the central cabinet,” a Congress leader said.
