Even Charminar Can Be Razed, If It's Dilapidated!

Deputy Chief Minister Mahamood Ali on Saturday stirred the hornet’s nest by saying that the government could demolish even historic Charminar, if it was in a dilapidated condition.

Reacting strongly to the demand of heritage activists and conservationists that Osmania General Hospital building should be restored and not demolished, Mahmood Ali said the government would not remain blind, if any structure was on the verge of collapse, even if it was a heritage structure.

“If Charminar also reaches dilapidated condition, we won’t hesitate to demolish it,” he said.

He slammed opposition parties for making a hue and cry on the shifting of the old hospital.

“For us the lives of the patients are more important than a heritage structure and the government is ready to spend Rs 100 cr for the new health facility,” he maintained.

Rajya Sabha member and Congress leader V Hanumantha Rao said Mahmood Ali’s remarks injured the sentiments of the people.

He said the State government has bounden duty to protect historical monuments in the State by effecting necessary repairs but not to demolish the old structures.

The Deputy Chief Minister’s remarks on the world-famous Charminar are irresponsible and deplorable, he alleged.
