Amaravati: All Hype, No Progress

It's more than a month since Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu got the foundation stone laid for Amaravati, the new capital of the State, by Prime Minister Narendra Modi amidst lot of hype and hoopla. It was a massive show of strength by Naidu by spending crores of rupees.

But since then, there has been very little progress on the construction of capital. Though Singapore government has given the master plan and layouts long ago, not a single brick has moved to the site of proposed capital city.

Though it was originally projected that the phase one of the capital city would be completed by 2017, it now looks impossible given the little progress.

“Unless the construction of buildings starts now, it is impossible to start functioning from Amaravati even by 2017. Otherwise, the government has to operate only from Vijayawada,” say sources.

It is learnt, the Naidu government is facing severe funds crunch for the commencement of the capital infrastructure. The amounts released by the Centre, it is learnt, have been wasted on foundation stone laying ceremony and payment to the Singapore firm.

Now, the government is said to be planning to rope in local construction companies to take up the constructions on build and transfer mode.

Till such time, Naidu continues to create a lot of hype in the media!
