Public resistance has forced the government to go soft on porn website and allow those which do not host child pornography.
Initially, it was decided to ban 857 websites. But public outcry has forced the government to have a rethink on the issue.
The government should not have yielded to the protestors. It is a proven fact that pornography is contributing to the rise in violence and rape against women.
Illiterate people coming from highly conservative cultures of rural India may be having no jobs or proper livelihoods. Most of them work as cab drivers, security guards etc. But they do have access to smart phones and porn content on them.
Prolonged exposure to such content actually results in making them commit crimes against women, in the heat of the moment.
A ban on porn is not a violation of the fundamental rights of the public. Freedom of expression and safety of women do not go hand in hand.
By denying access to root causes of violence against women such as porn sites, the government will have worked towards diverting the attention of the public towards healthier past times.
As for women who are protesting the ban on porn sites, they are better off in Amsterdam.
