Forced Equality Is Never Good For Society

Forced Equality Is Never Good For Society

The CEO of an IT company might have an auto rickshaw driver for his neighbor, if things go according to KCR’s plans.

He has ordered officials to acquire 2,000 acres of land in Hyderabad for the construction of two-bedroom houses for the poor.

He announced at the public meeting of TRS that the scheme would take off in May.

KCR said that the government would construct free houses for two lakh poor people in multi-storied complexes in the city, where the programme will initially be launched.

The intensive household survey in Hyderabad disclosed that two lakh families did not have houses. The government wants to ensure that not a single family goes without its own house in Hyderabad.

KCR asked the officials to construct the houses by utilizing huge tracts of unused land that was allotted to government offices, small time educational institutions, universities and clubs.

The houses should not be far flung but located in the center of the city, if possible, at Banjara Hills and Jubilee Hills and there should not be any fund crunch for the programme, said KCR.

“Why should the poor live in scattered settlements and sometimes away from well-developed areas? If the government can give away expensive land for private institutions, there is no reason why the same land cannot be used to provide houses for the poor,” said KCR.

On the face of it, the decision to provide the poor with housing is indeed a noble one. But then putting in stupid riders like locating them in Banjara Hills or Jubilee Hills is once again testimony to the fact that there runs a crazy streak in him.

Equality should never be forced on society. Rather conditions should be so enabled that over a period of time, everyone has equal access to opportunity.

If KCR were really that serious about equality then have him locate these ‘apartment complexes for the poor’ opposite Facebook or Google or opposite ‘Raheja Mind Space’.

He will then watch as his dreams of ‘Bangaru Telangana’ or a ‘Vendi Telangana’ come true even as employees there take the first available flight out of Hyderabad.
