TRS makes clean sweep of local body polls

Telangana Rashtra Samithi, which received some shock in the recent Lok Sabha elections, bounced back strongly to make a clean sweep of local body elections in Telangana.

Going by the results which were declared on Tuesday, the TRS will capture all the 32 zilla parishads and more than 90 per cent of the mandal parishads.

The Congress faced a humiliating defeat, while the BJP was almost wiped out in  zilla parishads.

According to the latest reports, the TRS bagged 443 out of 538 Zilla Parishad Territorial Constituencies (ZPTCs), while the Congress could get just 75 seats and the BJP only seven seats. The Congress did not open its account in as many as six districts.

And in the elections to mandal parishad territorial constituencies (MPTCs), the TRS won 3,557 out of 5817 seats. The Congress won 1,377 seats and the BJP 211 seats.

TRS working president K T Rama Rao described the victory as historic and unprecedented in the country. He said no party in the country had ever secured such a massive mandate in the local body elections.

He said the opposition parties could come anywhere nearer to the TRS.

“It is a referendum on the performance of the TRS government. And we shall live up to their expectations,” KTR said.
