Techie is Telangana's first COVID-19 positive case

Hyderabad: Telangana has reported the first Coronavirus positive case on Monday when a 24-year old software engineer from Hyderabad, who returned from Dubai last week tested positive for the virus.

While Union health ministry confirmed that the first case was reported in Telangana, state health minister E Rajender gave more details about the case in the evening and said the victim had been quarantined at Gandhi Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment.

The software engineer, however, works in a software company in Bengaluru and so, all his colleagues who travelled along with him to Dubai and also those in the office are now being tested.

The techie went to Dubai on a company work on February 15 and could have contracted the virus while working with some colleagues from Hong Kong. He returned to Bengaluru on February 20 and but was suffering from fever. 

He came back to Hyderabad on February 22, after attending office for two days. He went to Apollo Hospitals at Secunderabad for treatment of his fever as an outpatient. 

On March 1, the doctors grew suspicious about the symptoms as he was not getting relief from fever and cough. They collected his samples and got tested at Gandhi hospital, where he tested positive. The samples were later sent to Pune which confirmed the disease.

"We got the confirmation of his coronavirus today (March 2) afternoon and shared the information with the government of India,” Etela said.

The minister said at least 80 people who came in close contact with him will undergo tests. They included 27 are passengers who travelled with him in the bus from Bengaluru to Hyderabad and 20 medical staff at Apollo hospitals, Secunderabad, where he underwent treatment for fever and the rest are members of his joint family.
