Sharmila silent on Modi's telephonic talk

Sharmila silent on Modi's telephonic talk

A section of media and social media on Wednesday reported that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had called YSR Telangana party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy’s sister Y S Sharmila and enquired about the ill-treatment meted out to her by the Telangana government last week.

The reports said Modi had spoken to her for nearly 10 minutes and expressed his sympathy towards her. He also assured her of all help from the centre and even called her to Delhi for a meeting to discuss the political situation in Telangana.

Normally, if any leader who gets a call from the Prime Minister, he would be on cloud nine and he or she would immediately share the information with the media. At least, he would post a thanksgiving message to Modi on the social media.

If it is a leader like Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu, he would use the same to garner huge publicity and the pro-TDP media would have made it a major political development, as if it would result in the collapse of the Jagan Mohan Reddy government.

People have seen how this section of media played up the brief interaction between Modi and Naidu in Delhi the other day on their front pages and conducted big debates on the same.

Interestingly, the office of Sharmila has not confirmed to the media about her conversation with Modi. She preferred to remain silent, without confirming it or denying it. Her office also feigned ignorance about the same.

During a brief speech while playing tributes to Dr B R Ambedkar, she made a brief reference to Modi enquiring with her brother Jagan about the incident of Hyderabad police towing away her vehicle when she was still inside and said: “Thank you Modi ji and all those who condemned the incident.”

But she did not utter any single word beyond that. Apparently, she thought her conversation with Modi, if it really happened, would undo all the hard work she had done all these days, as it would endorse the TRS allegation that the BJP was behind her padayatra.

Otherwise, it may also be a kite-flying report from this section of media. Since Modi would not deny this report that he had called Sharmila; not she would deny the same, this media might have carried the report for the sake of sensation!
