Kavitha finds fault with Kaleshwaram project utility

In yet another embarrassment to Bharat Rashtra Samithi led by former Telangana chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, his daughter and Telangana Jagruthi president K Kavitha has once again triggered political tremors by questioning the utility of the Kaleshwaram lift irrigation project, the flagship project of KCR.

During a tour of Nizamabad and Kamareddy districts, Kavitha raised questions about the project’s execution, outcomes, and alleged irregularities.

She told reporters that the project had failed to deliver water benefits to either Nizamabad or Kamareddy, despite massive expenditure and ambitious promises.

Kavitha said package-22 of Kaleshwaram was designed to supply water to Kamareddy, requiring Rs 1,446 crore, but only Rs. 450 crore was sanctioned.

Against a requirement of 1,500 acres, even two-thirds of the land acquisition was not completed.

“Not a single acre in Kamareddy has received water from Kaleshwaram,” she alleged.

Nizamabad too has not benefitted, barring one season when water was released through the Haldi Vagu.

The capacity of Kondam Cheruvu was reduced without proportionate revision of project expenditure.

Packages 21 and 22, she said, “did not help people but only benefited contractors.”

She added that original canal designs required several thousand acres of land but were later altered to reduce acquisition, with attempts made to supply piped water through tanks—efforts that yielded no results.

“I know that the BRS leaders will spew venom against me for raising all these issues. But I have to speak the truth,” she said.

She insisted that if the present Congress government plans not to continue the Kaleshwaram works, it must explain alternative measures to provide water to Kamareddy.

Commenting on her suspension from the BRS, Kavitha alleged that it was part of a deliberate attempt to push her out of the family.

She said her family has a history of commitment to public movements and political activism.

“Those responsible for suspending me from the party may derive short-lived satisfaction, but I remain committed to Telangana, which is my other family,” Kavitha asserted.

Reflecting on her imprisonment, she said she was more concerned about her mother’s health than her own children.

Her remarks have triggered fresh debate within BRS circles, as they directly question the integrity and outcomes of one of the party’s flagship irrigation projects.
