Elections to 2 MLC seats in Telangana on Jan 29

The Election Commission of India on Thursday released the schedule for the conduct of by-elections to two MLC seats under MLAs’ quota in Telangana, which would be held on January 29.

The elections are being necessitated with the resignation of two sitting MLCs of Bharat Rashtra Samithi – Kadiyam Srihari and Padi Kaushik Reddy, who got elected to the state legislative assemblies from Station Ghanpur and Huzurabad constituencies respectively.

Both of them got elected to the state legislative councils under MLAs’ quota in November 2021 and they resigned from their seats on December 9, 2023, following their elections to the state assembly. The newly-elected MLCs would be in the posts till November 30, 2027.

The notification for the two MLC elections will be released on January 11 and the last date for filing of nominations is January 18. The last date for withdrawal of the nominations will be January 22.

“The polling, if necessary, will be held from 9 am to 4 pm on January 29. The counting of votes will begin at 5 pm on the same day and the result will be declared immediately,” the EC said in its statement.

However, the election will, in all probability, will be without any contest. Going by the party strength, both the Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi can win one seat each. Neither party has the strength to win both the seats.
