Cong gets some MLC seats to woo dissidents

The Congress high command has an opportunity to appease disgruntled party leaders who couldn't secure party tickets in the just-concluded assembly elections in Telangana.

On Saturday, three Bharat Rashtra Samithi MLCs resigned from their seats upon their election to the state assembly.

They are Kadiyam Srihari, Padi Kaushik Reddy, and Palla Rajeshwar Reddy, who were elected to the state assembly from Station Ghanpur, Huzurabad, and Jangaon, respectively.

They submitted their resignation letters to state legislative council chairman Gutta Sukhender Reddy, who promptly accepted their resignations.

Another MLC from Congress, K Narayan Reddy, also resigned from his seat following his election as an MLA from the Kalwakurthy assembly constituency.

In addition to these three vacancies, there are two existing vacancies of MLCs under the Governor’s quota.

Although the previous BRS government led by K Chandrasekhar Rao appointed two individuals, Dasoju Sravan and K Satyanarayana, as MLCs under the Governor’s quota, Tamilisai Soundararajan rejected the appointments, stating they did not have sufficient qualifications for the nomination under the quota.

Now, the Revanth Reddy government has the opportunity to nominate six MLC seats with disgruntled aspirants who sought Congress tickets in the assembly elections.

Meanwhile, three Rajya Sabha seats belonging to the BRS will be vacated over the next four months.

The terms of Rajya Sabha members Badugula Lingaiah Yadav, J Santosh Kumar, and Vaddiraju Ravichandra will expire on April 2 next year. The Congress will also have the chance to fill at least two of these three Rajya Sabha seats.

Although four Lok Sabha seats have become vacant due to the election of sitting MPs to the state assembly, including A Revanth Reddy from Malkajgiri, N Uttam Kumar Reddy from Nalgonda, Komatireddy Venkat Reddy from Bhongir (all Congress), and Kotha Prabhakar Reddy from Medak (BRS), there may not be by-elections for these seats as the Lok Sabha elections are due within four months.
