Women's Free Bus Travel Resulted In Jobs Boom

Karnataka’s Shakti scheme, which offers free bus travel for women, has led to a significant rise in female employment in Bengaluru.

According to a recent report, women's employment in the city increased by 23 percent since the program's launch.

The scheme has improved access to job opportunities, especially for women from lower-income backgrounds.

With transportation costs no longer a burden, many women have begun commuting longer distances for work, widening their options.

Sectors like retail, domestic work and hospitality have seen the most noticeable uptick in female participation. Employers too have welcomed the change, noting a larger and more reliable workforce.

Beyond employment, the scheme is also boosting women’s confidence and independence. Many beneficiaries say the program has allowed them to pursue part-time jobs, education, or vocational training.

Overall, Karnataka’s free bus initiative is being seen as a strong step toward gender inclusive urban development.
