Former U.S. President Donald Trump recently stated that he used trade as leverage to de-escalate tensions between India and Pakistan, implying that both countries were told U.S. trade would stop if hostilities continued.
At a White House briefing, Trump claimed he warned both nations, saying, “If you don’t stop, there’s no trade. If you stop, we’ll trade a lot.”
According to him, this approach encouraged both sides to step back.
However, India has strongly denied these claims.
In an official response, India stated that during recent high-level conversations — including calls between U.S. Vice President JD Vance and Prime Minister Modi, as well as Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s discussions with External Affairs Minister Dr. S. Jaishankar and NSA Ajit Doval — trade was never mentioned.
However, Donald Trump is not speaking responsibly, once again stirring emotions and geopolitical tensions in his trademark style.
Two days ago, he claimed that he was responsible for bringing about a ceasefire between India and Pakistan.
Now, he is speaking as if the USA is controlling both countries through trade threats. This is not going down well with Indians, and Trump is increasingly being viewed unfavorably.
