Microsoft is cutting 3% of its workforce

Microsoft announced on Tuesday that it will lay off approximately 3% of its global workforce, impacting employees across all levels, teams, and regions.

“We continue to implement organizational changes necessary to best position the company for success in a dynamic marketplace,” a Microsoft spokesperson told CNBC.

Despite reporting stronger-than-expected earnings and a positive quarterly outlook in April, the tech giant is proceeding with what could be its largest wave of layoffs since it cut 10,000 jobs in 2023.

As of June, Microsoft employed 228,000 people worldwide, meaning the cuts will affect several thousand roles.

Unlike the performance-based layoffs announced in January, these job cuts are not related to employee performance.

One of the key goals of the restructuring is to streamline operations by reducing layers of management, the company said.

The announcement follows a broader trend in the tech industry. Just last week, cybersecurity firm CrowdStrike revealed plans to cut 5% of its workforce.
