Jayaprada Dumps AP, Joins BJP

Glamorous actress of yesteryears Jayaprada seems to have lost her hope of staging a comeback in Andhra Pradesh politics, as no party evinced interested in taking her.

So, on Monday, Jayaprada joined the Bharatiya Janata Party which she had opposed tooth and nail in the past. Since she also failed to return to Samajwadi Party, she thought BJP is the better choice to test her fortunes.

She is likely to get an MP ticket from Rampur constituency in Uttar Pradesh, which she had represented in the past. If she gets, she will be fighting against Samajwadi Party leader Azam Khan, who is also being supported by Bahujan Samaj Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal.

Jayaprada, who entered politics in 1994 by joining the Telugu Desam Party, later became a Rajya Sabha member and also president of Telugu Mahila, the women’s wing of the party.

However, after she was denied the Rajya Sabha seat for a second term, she quit the TDP and went to national politics by joining the Samajwadi Party, thanks to her political mentor Amar Singh.

She became an MP from Rampur twice between 2004 and 2014, but was subsequently expelled from it along with Amar Singh on the charges of anti-party activities. Then Jayaprada joined RLD and in 2014 she contested for the Lok Sabha and lost.

In the recent past, Jayaprada tried to stage a comeback to AP politics and tried her luck with the TDP as well as YSR Congress party. But there were no takers for her. Finally, she had no option but to join the saffron party.
