Indian Student Handcuffed, Pinned At US Airport; Deported

A social media post has gone viral after an Indian student was allegedly handcuffed and deported from Newark Airport in the United States.

Entrepreneur Kunal Jain shared photos and videos on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, showing the student restrained and pinned to the ground. Jain described the student’s treatment as that of a criminal.

“I witnessed a young Indian student being deported from Newark Airport last night—handcuffed, crying, treated like a criminal. He came chasing dreams, not causing harm. As an NRI, I felt helpless and heartbroken. This is a human tragedy,” Jain wrote.

He added that the student was scheduled to board the same flight as him but never made it on board.

“This poor kid’s parents likely have no idea what’s happening to him. @IndianEmbassyUS @DrSJaishankar — he was supposed to fly out last night but never boarded. Someone needs to follow up with New Jersey authorities. He looked disoriented when I saw him,” Jain said.

According to Jain, the student—who spoke in Haryanvi—insisted he was mentally sound but claimed authorities were trying to portray him as mentally unwell.

“These students arrive in the U.S. with valid visas in the morning but are unable to clearly explain their purpose to immigration officers. By evening, they are sent back — restrained and treated like criminals,” Jain stated. “This is not an isolated incident. There are reportedly three to four such cases happening daily. It’s becoming a disturbing pattern.”

Jain’s post has triggered widespread concern and calls for intervention from Indian authorities. There has been no official response yet from U.S. immigration officials or the Indian Embassy.
