Unrest in OU: Modi Event Cancelled!

The ongoing unrest among the students in Osmania University has forced the Centre cancel the forthcoming prestigious event – the 105th edition of Indian Science Congress, to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on January 3, has been indefinitely postponed.

It was officially announced by Indian Science Congress Association and Osmania University on Thursday.

The OU authorities issued a statement stating that the Indian Science Congress, Scheduled to be held from January 3 to 7 was indefinitely postponed due to prevailing disturbed atmosphere on the campus.

More than 2,000 scientists from across the world, including 15 Noble laureates in science from different countries, were invited to participate in the annual event.

The authorities said the event was postponed due to security concerns. The intelligence department suggested the Centre not to conduct the Science Congress in view of the prevailed law and order situation on the campus, which has the potentiality to cause disturbances to the prestigious event.

The OU students, who played a key role during the separate Telangana movement and lost their lives, have been agitating against the Telangana Rashtra Samithi government led by chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who had completely ignored them after coming to power.

They have been agitating against the Telangana government for not filling up job vacancies. There were violent protests by students who tried to take out a rally demanding jobs last year.

They even disturbed the OU centenary celebrations inaugurated by former President Pranab Mukherjee last year, so much that KCR refused to address them during the celebrations.

The recent suicide by a post-graduate student committed suicide allegedly due to uncertainty in employment opportunities and the agitation by Adivasi students, besides indefinite strike by non-teaching staff led to the OU authorities throwing up their hands in the conduct of the Science Congress.
