The open announcement made by YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy that his party would support the BJP candidate in Presidential elections and that it had no differences with the BJP whatsoever, except on the issue of special category status, seems to have sent the ruling Telugu Desam Party in Andhra Pradesh into jitters.
It is a sort of shock to TDP president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu who is desperate to continue the alliance with the BJP in the next elections as well, notwithstanding the fact that several BJP leaders are opposing the continuation of alliance with the TDP.
Naturally, Jagan’s goodwill gesture to the BJP has angered the TDP leaders.
“It has clearly exposed the double standards of the YSR Congress party and its president Jaganmohan Reddy. He has surrendered to the BJP leadership only to wriggle out of the court cases.
We never expected that Jagan would stoop to such a level,” TDP leader and irrigation minister Devineni Umamaheshwar Rao said.
He said Jagan’s Delhi visit was kept a secret and even his own party MLAs were not aware of his moves.
“He prostrated before Modi and requested him to bail him out of the cases. We will take his dirty politics into public,” Devineni said.
CPI (M) also strongly condemned Jagan’s support to Modi.
“Till the other day, he said he would take the other opposition parties along with him to fight against the BJP. What moral right he has now to talk about secularism? His decision would distance Christians and Muslims away from YSRC,” CPI (M) leader P Madhu said.
