Stalemate Continues On YSRC MPs' Resignations

The fate of five YSR Congress MPs, who resigned from their Lok Sabha membership in protest against denial of special category status to Andhra Pradesh will continue to hang in balance at least for another 10 days.

Lok Sabha Speaker Sumithra Mahajan, who is supposed to accept the resignations, left for her foreign tour without taking any decision on accepting their resignations. She would be returning only on June 19 and till then, the stalemate continues.

As far as the five MPs – Mekapati Rajamohan Reddy (Nellore), Y V Subba Reddy (Ongole), P Mithun Reddy (Rajampet), V Varaprasada Rao (Tirupati) and Y V Avinash Reddy (Kadapa) – are concerned, their resignations have already been accepted.

They claimed that they had “re-submitted” their resignations to the Speaker, reiterating that they were committed to the resignations and insisted that the resignations be accepted immediately.

But the Speaker kept the revised resignations also in abeyance and there was no official confirmation from the Speaker’s Office even as she left for foreign tour on Friday afternoon.

So, the MPs will have no option but to wait till June 19 for getting their resignations accepted officially. Till such time, they still continue to be Lok Sabha members.

Telugu Desam Party senior leader and finance minister Yanamala Ramakrishnudu said there was no such practice in the Parliamentary system for “resubmission” of their resignation letters.

“If the resignations are submitted as per the Speaker’s format, they would be accepted immediately. It does mean their original resignations were not in proper format. Hence, they had been asked to submit revised letters,” Yanamala said.
