The world of Telugu newspapers has seen many changes in recent years. Once, the news papers that made their presence have now seen no where as readership has diminished.
For example, Namasthe Telangana slowly lost its readers and even stepped away from the ABC survey, as its circulation numbers could reveal its weakness.
Now, the big three Telugu papers are Eenadu, Sakshi and Andhra Jyothi. Among them, Eenadu still holds the top position. Its strong brand value and the weakness of rivals help it remain number one.
However, the gap between Eenadu and Sakshi is narrowing, only about 1.7 lakh copies separate them. Andhra Jyothi, despite loud presentation, remains far behind.
The Covid-19 pandemic badly hurt print media. Eenadu lost nearly 2.7 lakh copies and Sakshi lost over 2.3 lakh. Circulation has not returned to old glory; Eenadu once touched 14.8 lakh but is now around 11.8 lakh.
Region wise, Sakshi dominates in districts like Nellore, Ongole, Tirupati and Kurnool, while Eenadu is stronger in Telangana.
Interestingly, political stands do not always decide readership. In the current market, Eenadu and Sakshi continue as the most trusted papers, and Andhra Jyothi fighting for space.
