Sharmila to call off her padayatra: PK effect?

Sharmila to call off her padayatra: PK effect?

Has Y S Sharmila, president of YSR Telangana Party and sister of Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy decided to call off her marathon padayatra across the length and breadth of Telangana?

The answer is yes, according to sources close to the party. While lack of proper response from the people is said to be the reason for her decision, the party leadership is said to be looking for excuses that would be convincing to the people.

Sharmila, who kicked off her padayatra on October 20 from Chevella, a sentimental place for her father late Y S Rajasekhar Reddy, walked for 21 days before applying brakes on November 10 citing the model code of conduct for the local body elections.

Sharmila had covered 150 villages spanning six assembly constituencies – Chevella, Maheshwaram, Shamshabad, Ibrahimpatnam, Devarakonda and Munugode during the padayatra and she claimed that she had received huge response from the people.

She tried to take up 72-hour deeksha for the farmers at Indira Park on farmers’ issues, but was given permission only for one day. Even then, she did not get much response from the people.

Sharmila claimed that she would resume the padayatra after the model code of conduct comes to an end, which is likely by December 16. But according to sources, she might not resume her padayatra.

“She may not announce it immediately, but would postpone it on some pretext or the other and eventually, would drop the plan,” sources said.

While lack of response from the people could be one reason, there is also a talk that Sharmila has taken the decision following the withdrawal of contract by her political strategist Prashant Kishor.

It is learnt Prashant Kishor, who is now extremely busy in consolidating the opposition parties across the country under the leadership of West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee against the Bharatiya Janata Party, has expressed his inability to help Sharmila.

On the other hand, he reportedly advised Sharmila to drop her padayatra plan and also slow down her political plans in Telangana, as there is hardly any scope for her in the existing political scenario in the state.

The reason for Prashant backing out from the support to Sharmila is his reported negotiations with the Telangana Rashtra Samithi as part of his nationwide initiative. And KCR is also said to be in positive mood to engage Prashant. So, there is no point in helping Sharmila at this stage!
