What is wrong nowadays with people who carry the tag of President? First it was Obama and now, it is our very own (former Congressman) President, Pranab Mukherjee.
In his opening remarks at the 46th Governors’ conference in New Delhi that was also attended by Prime Minister Modi, Pranab Mukherjee said that the Constitution was the only guiding document for providing framework for governance and asked governors to ensure peace and communal harmony.
"Every Indian looks forward to the Constitution as the guarantor of liberties, freedom and equality. Any deviation from the principles and provisions embodied in the Constitution would weaken the democratic fabric of the country and jeopardise the social, economic and political well-being of our citizens," he said.
The President said the Governors and Lt Governors have the "primary responsibility" to ensure that the affairs of the states and Union Territories are conducted strictly in accordance with the letter and spirit of this hallowed document.
"Prevalence of peace and communal harmony must be ensured," he said.
If Pranab is so conscious about the validity of the Constitution then why did he sign the ‘bifurcation bill’ of AP even though 4 crore people were opposed to it? Only because it was a Bill proposed by the Congress to whom he owed his position of President.
And today by directly snubbing Modi in front of the Governors, he might think that he is a hero of some sorts. In fact, if he had any problem or apprehensions, he could have communicated them directly to the Prime Minister instead of making use of his august office to act like an opposition spokesperson.
But the fact that he choose to castigate the Prime Minister indirectly only gives rise to the suspicion that he is still acting as a Congressman rather than the President of this nation.
Just because the Prime Minister exercised decorum by not responding to the unwarranted and uncalled advice of Barrack Obama does not mean that he is a soft target that everyone can pelt stones at. Modi showed the warm side of his character during Obama’s visit. But he can be equally ruthless to those who take him for granted!
