Jana Sena Party chief and Andhra Pradesh deputy chief minister Pawan Kalyan appears to be under tremendous pressure from the party leaders and cadre to step up his pace and start efforts to further strengthen the party ahead of the next elections.
So far, the first four years under the coalition government have been one phase, but with the possibility of simultaneous elections being held earlier than expected, party leaders are reportedly urging Pawan Kalyan to steer the party toward becoming an independent political force.
Over the past year, he has focused largely on his ministerial portfolio, spending little time on party affairs and doing little specifically for the Kapu community since taking office. Party insiders say he took this time mainly to understand his ministry’s work.
Initially, Pawan is said to have kept a distance from the public and cadre to avoid failing in his first ministerial assignment. However, with his “honeymoon period” ending, criticism of his performance has grown.
Even Jana Sena leaders, once quick to defend him on social media or in press conferences, have lately been silent. Dissatisfaction has arisen over lack of appointments, financial strain on workers, and perceived lack of respect from coalition partners.
Fearing the party could weaken in the next four years if this continues, Pawan Kalyan has reportedly decided to meet key leaders of constituencies, assess the local situations, and bring them to chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu’s attention.
He is also planning visits to constituencies neglected by coalition partners, to boost local morale and send a subtle warning to TDP leaders, sources said.
Additionally, Pawan is likely to propose to Naidu that a joint meeting of top leaders from all coalition parties be held every three months to address repeated grievances from multiple constituencies.
This comes amid complaints that TDP leaders are even obstructing Jana Sena leaders from participating in pension distribution programs.
Sources indicate Pawan will ask Naidu to resolve such matters promptly, even if it means summoning local leaders for discussions.
In short, Pawan Kalyan seems to be charting a new course, with a roadmap to regain momentum for his party.
