Nandyal: Huge polling to benefit TDP or YSRC?

Nandyal: Huge polling to benefit TDP or YSRC?

Normally in any by-elections, the percentage of polling will be less compared to general election, because voters show a lot of apathy in coming to polling stations within a short span of two or three years.

But on Wednesday, Nandyal assembly constituency, which went to by-elections, witnessed unusually high percentage of polling.

As against 76 per cent in 2009 and 72 per cent in 2014, the polling percentage in the present by-elections is around 80-82 per cent according to the tentative estimates of the Election Commission authorities as on evening.

It is learnt the polling percentage in the rural areas of Nandyal assembly constituency is nearly 90 per cent, compared to the urban areas.

Now it is interesting to know as to whom these voters favoured – the Telugu Desam Party or the YSR Congress party.

Normally, in any by-election, the ruling party has an advantage because it has the official machinery, money power and man power at its command. But it appears Nandyal has presented a different scenario. The seat belongs to the YSRC, though the MLA Bhuma Nagi Reddy later jumped to the TDP.

So, the turnout of large number of voters, particularly womenfolk, at the polling stations is believed to be a sign in favour of the YSR Congress party because they have got a chance to vent their anger at the ruling TDP.

However, Bhuma’s daughter Akhila Priya thinks the women turned up in large numbers to bless her and her party, because they have the sympathy towards her.

In any case, the fate of the candidates is sealed in the EVMs now and the verdict will be out on August 28.
