Urbanization brings with it, its own set of problems and highways today across AP and Telangana have literally turned into death traps.
Not a single day goes by without new of one major accident or the other on our highways. Against this backdrop, this was one of the issues raised by Chandrababu Naidu at his review meeting.
In AP alone, around 23000 people have lost their lives in road accidents in the last three years. Chandrababu Naidu is learnt to have asked for the figure to come down by 50% by the end of this year.
Responding to Naidu’s instructions, Transport Minister, Sidda Raghava Rao who could not attend the meeting held a video conference with officials and asked them to take steps to control road accidents. He also directed them to check the fitness of all heavy vehicles at regular intervals.
This is certainly a good decision by Naidu! With growing numbers of families that prefer to travel from one city to the other by car rather than the conventional rail route or using APSRTC, it is high time some concrete safety measures are put in place.
