Fact Sheet: A Ridiculous Claim

New Delhi: It is indeed a ridiculous claim by some social groups that the government has erred in allowing the police into the campus of JNU.

The university is not the embassy of a foreign nation which enjoys immunity from prosecution. The police in India can enter any place when their presence is deemed necessary because their responsibility is to maintain law and order.

If an unfortunate girl student becomes the victim of eve-teasing or rape, then the police are necessary. But when there is a serious issue concerning the nation’s integrity that takes place on campus, an incident that threatens to polarize the nation, the police should keep away and treat it as an internal matter? What kind of nonsense is this?

No institution or premises in India is above the law and the duty of the police is to uphold it everywhere. The constitution empowers them to do so. Therefore, it is high time that these social groups clam up.
