The Telangana government has resolved its river disputes with Maharashtra and both states will be signing an agreement soon.
As part of this, Maharashtra will be constructing two reservoirs on Penganga at Rajapeta and Penpahad while Telangana will build three reservoirs on Godavari and Pranahita at Medigadda, Annaram and Sundilla as part of the Kaleswaram project.
The agreement will pave the way for speedy construction of the Kaleswaram project. The Kaleswaram project is expected to cost around Rs 71000 crore and Harish Rao now wants national status for Kaleswaram as it would help to provide water to the most backward areas of Telangana.
Now, Kaleswaram costs more than double of Polavaram. In the latest Union budget, a paltry Rs 100 crore was sanctioned to Polavaram.
There is no reason to believe that a frugal NDA is going to make any special concessions to TRS. When its ally, the TDP is being treated like a beggar, there is no reason to suppose the Modi government will invite criticism by catering to the wishes of Harish Rao.
