The construction of much-hyped new capital of Andhra Pradesh Amaravati, as expected, has begun showing the fangs of corruption right from the day one.
Since it is going to be a completely new capital, it has naturally given an excellent opportunity for officials and politicians to make huge money, whether it is in illegal occupation of lands or sanction of layouts for constructions.
While landlords are virtually minting money with the artificial jacking up of land prices, officials are making big money by taking collecting mamools for granting layout plans.
It was evident from the way an official was caught red-handed by the Anti-Corruption Bureau sleuths on Monday for accepting bribe to clear a building plan.
The official Saikumar was caught while accepting Rs 40,000 as bribe from a person from Gudivada in Krishna district for clearing a building plan. Earlier when the complainant approached Saikumar, he demanded heavy amount to clear the plan.
It was the first-ever raid by the ACB authorities, but sources said there were many instances which were not brought to the notice of the ACB.
The entire project of Amaravati, thus, smacks of large scale corruption and one may not be surprised, if more and more such corrupt deeds come out in the coming days.
