BJP Plans Pro-backward Classes Push in Andhra

The BJP has begun the spadework in Andhra Pradesh for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. The arty’s latest strategy is to win the confidence of the numerically significant Kapu community, targeting around 14 of the 25 Lok Sabha seats in the state.

While BJP president Amit Shah has already deputed general secretary Ram Madhav to do the initial planning, sources said the party will launch a campaign to project TDP as “stalling development in the state by getting out of NDA in a hurry and raking up the sentiments of the people”.

BJP leader GVL Narasimha Rao said this campaign will be aimed at “debunking the propaganda by the Naidu government against the Centre.”

Backward communities form 40% of the state and the party will focus on them, a party leader said.

BJP has just two MPs and four MLAs in the state. Kapus form 27% of AP’s population and wield influence in 39 Assembly constituencies.
