Behind The Scene: When History Repeats Itself

Behind The Scene: When History Repeats Itself

In 1998, on the occasion of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpaee’s birthday, saris were distributed in his constituency.

A lot of women queued up for them resulting in a stampede in which a few women died. This angered the people and contributed to the defeat of the BJP.

Something similar has happened in Telangana with the government deciding to distribute saris on the occasion of Bathukamma.

The original saris were usurped by middlemen who distributed cheap saris in their place. This angered the womenfolk who expressed their ire by burning the saris in public.

Undeniably, the prestige of the government hit an all-time low with this one incident. Moral of the story: Saris can bring governments down.
