Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu, the youngest Union Minister from Srikakulam district, holds a special place in politics.
While his father, the late Yerran Naidu, became a Union Minister after crossing 40, Rammohan took charge of the crucial Civil Aviation Ministry in his mid-30s.
But locals say the district hasn’t gained much from his position, and dissatisfaction is growing.
Despite winning three times in a row and making the Srikakulam MP seat a stronghold for the TDP, critics allege Rammohan has distanced himself from his constituency. Even party workers reportedly find it hard to meet him.
People claim that any problem they raise is simply passed on to his uncle, TDP senior leader and Minister Kinjarapu Atchannaidu.
This has left many supporters disappointed, questioning why a Union Minister is needed if “everything is handled by uncle.”
Some TDP leaders in the district say a true leader should be visible to the people and work on solving their issues.
Political well-wishers warn that opportunities don’t come often, and if used well, they can secure a strong position for decades. But critics say Rammohan prefers words over action.
For the record, except for 2009, the Srikakulam MP seat has been with the TDP - and mostly within the Kinjarapu family - for over three decades.
Many believe this time voters may seek a change. What happens next remains to be seen.
