The Supreme Court on Monday quashed the cases filed by the YSR Congress party leaders during the previous Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy regime against against Dr Narreddy Sunitha, daughter of slain former minister Y S Vivekananda Reddy, her husband Rajasekhar Reddy and former Central Bureau of Investigation officer Ram Singh.
The bench comprising Justice M M Sundresh and Justice N K Singh stated that it would quash the cases filed against Viveka’s daughter Sunitha, son-in-law Narreddy Rajasekhar Reddy, and former CBI investigating officer Ramsingh, as the allegations against them were not substantiated with evidence.
Appearing on behalf of Sunitha, senior advocate Siddharth Luthra argued that the bail granted to key accused, including Avinash Reddy, should be cancelled.
He pointed out that the CBI had closed the investigation only because of the Supreme Court’s deadline. He urged that a deeper probe was required to expose the masterminds and actual perpetrators.
Luthra also told the court that witnesses were being threatened and evidence was being destroyed.
He alleged that conspiratorial cases had been filed against Sunitha and her husband, as well as the then CBI officer Ramsingh. On this, Justice Sundresh said those cases would be quashed.
Meanwhile, Additional Solicitor General S V Raju, appearing for the CBI, said the Viveka murder case was extremely serious.
He told the court that the accused had initially spread the narrative that Viveka died of a heart attack and later claimed it was due to vomiting blood, while actually wiping away murder evidence.
He stressed that the accused could face the death penalty. The Supreme Court will take a decision on this matter. Earlier, the CBI itself had said it could conduct further probe if specifically directed by the Supreme Court.
The court is expected to decide on this aspect as well.
