Hereafter, it's Amaravati in all official letters of AP

Following the Centre’s statutory approval of Amaravati as the capital city of Andhra Pradesh through an amendment to the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act, 2014, the state government on Wednesday issued clear instructions to all departments to officially use the name “Amaravati” in all letters and documents.

A circular issued by Chief Secretary G Sai Prasad to all departments directed them to adopt the standard spelling of the state capital as “Amaravati” across all official records and communications.

“It is Amaravati, not Amaravathi,” the circular emphasised.

The instructions have been formally communicated to district collectors, directing all government departments, local bodies, and administrative offices to ensure uniform spelling in official documents, files, letterheads, notifications, and websites.

Officials said the move would ensure consistency and eliminate discrepancies in official records related to the capital.

This development follows the recent grant of legal status to Amaravati.

The Andhra Pradesh Assembly had earlier passed a resolution seeking legal backing for the capital and forwarded it to the Centre.

Subsequently, the Union government introduced a bill in Parliament, which was approved by both Houses.

Following Presidential assent, a gazette notification was issued amending the Andhra Pradesh Reorganisation Act to formally designate Amaravati as the state capital.

The latest directive on spelling is seen as part of broader efforts to institutionalise uniformity in governance and official documentation.
