SC impact: AP HC upholds CID case in land scam

Perhaps for the first time in the Amaravati land scam case, the Andhra Pradesh high court on Wednesday gave an order in favour of the Jagan Mohan Reddy government, but only after getting a reprimand from Supreme Court.

The high court, which had earlier granted indefinite stay on the investigation into Amaravati land scam involving retired tehsildar of Thullur Anne Sudheer Babu, dismissed his petition seeking to quash the investigation by AP Crime Investigation Department (CID) authorities.

This would pave way for the CID authorities to go ahead with its investigation into the alleged land scam in Amaravati during the TDP regime.

Earlier, the CID authorities Sudheer Babu and another person Gummadi Suresh who were allegedly involved in the land scam.

Sudheer Babu, who is understood to have close relations with former chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, was facing the charges of fudging the land records to favour a few TDP leaders. He had allegedly indulged in manipulation of revenue records.

Similarly, Gummadi Ramesh from Vijayawada has been charged with purchasing lands assigned to Dalits during the TDP regime, which was against the rules.

However, Sudheer Babu moved the high court and got a stay order on the CID investigation. This was challenged by the Jagan government in the Supreme Court in the form of a special leave petition in September.

On October 1, the Supreme Court found fault with the high court for stalling the investigation and directed that it should settle the case by concluding hearing within one week.

The SC said there should not be any stay on the ongoing investigation into any issue and the law should be allowed to take its own course.
