Laptops in place of cash under Amma Vodi scheme?

Amma Vodi, the flagship of the Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government launched as part of its “Navaratnalu” programme, is all set to undergo major modifications in the coming days.

The Amma Vodi scheme is aimed at providing a financial assistance of Rs 15,000 to every mother or the recognised guardian to enable her for educating her child or children from Class 1 to Class 12 (Intermediate Education), in all private aided and private unaided schools, recognised government schools, junior colleges and residential colleges in the State of AP

The scheme is applicable the families below poverty line households, irrespective of religion, creed, caste and region.

The amount of Rs 15,000 is deposited directly in January every year in the beneficiaries’ savings bank accounts until the child/children complete class 12.

After implementing the scheme for the last two years, the Jagan government has decided to make certain changes in the scheme.

Instead of depositing cash in the accounts of mothers, the government is now planning to provide laptops to the beneficiary students.

Apparently, the government has got the reports that the cash incentive being given to the families is being misused.

There were also reports of fake beneficiaries were registered under the scheme and the funds were being diverted.

That is why, the government has decided to make modifications in the scheme and supply laptops to the beneficiaries instead of cash. However, initially, the government wants to supply laptops only to those who are interested in it.

That is why, it issued a notification asking the beneficiaries to express their views, suggestions and objections on the modified Amma Vodi scheme on the website [email protected] by 5 pm on September 17.

The same modification is also being done in the Jagananna Vasathi Deevena scheme, under which scholarships will be provided to all eligible candidates.

An amount of Rs 10,000 is paid to each ITI Student, Rs 15,000 for Polytechnic student, and Rs 15,000 for each Degree pursuing student.

The government has decided to issue tender notice for the purchase of laptops. Since the value of tenders is more than Rs 100 crore, it is being referred to the AP Judicial Commission.

If there are no objections from the beneficiaries, the government would go ahead with the modified scheme, sources said.

The final order would be placed after getting clearance from the judicial commission. In all probability, the modified scheme will be implemented from January next.
