India's Semiconductor Investments: A Big Insult To AP

The Union Government has approved ten semiconductor manufacturing projects across India, totaling over Rs 159,716 crore in investment.

Gujarat, the home state of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, emerged as the biggest winner, securing four major projects like Micron Technology (Rs 22,516 crore, Sanand), Tata & Powerchip JV (Rs 91,000 crore, Dholera), CG Power-Renesas-Stars (Rs 7,600 crore, Sanand), and Kaynes Semicon (Rs 3,300 crore, Sanand). Together, these account for Rs 124,416 crore of the national total.

Other states received much smaller allocations with Assam Rs 27,000 crore, Uttar Pradesh Rs 3,706 crore, Odisha Rs 4,009 crore, Andhra Pradesh Rs 468 crore and Punjab Rs 117 crore.

Gujarat’s dominance is attributed to its ready industrial infrastructure, investor-friendly policies, and the state’s aggressive push to position itself as India’s semiconductor hub, and above all it is the home state of the PM.

In contrast, Andhra Pradesh’s modest Rs 468-crore allocation to ASIP is seen as a political gain through the Alliance government in power, ensuring the state’s token presence in the national semiconductor roadmap.

This is in fact an insult to Telugus, getting only such insignificant investment despite the so-called double engine sarkar. There should be voice from Telugus of AP for getting such tiny chunk and Telangana for receiving a zero.

With these approvals, India aims to boost its electronics self reliance, but the distribution highlights stark regional imbalances in investment.
