Delhi Varsity Students Oppose Jagan Plan

A proposal made by Andhra Pradesh chief minister Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy to get Delhi-based Sri Venkateshwara College affiliated to Andhra University in Visakhapatnam has triggered uproar in the students of Delhi University.

The Sri Venkateshwara College, being managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams, is affiliated to Delhi University and students are admitted to various degree and post-graduation courses in this college, based on the marks they obtain in the entrance test conducted by the Delhi University.

Two weeks ago, Jagan wrote a letter to Union education minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishak, requesting that Sri Venkateswara College be disaffiliated from Delhi university and affiliated with Andhra University.

Jagan said his government wanted to amend the AP Universities Act, 1991 to expand the power of affiliation of Andhra University to affiliate Sri Venkateswara College, Delhi so as to facilitate greater access to higher education in Delhi for students of AP origin.

The chief minister said the proposal was to see that more Telugu people in Delhi would get a chance to take up higher education.

“There is a need that seats in the college be made available to students from Andhra Pradesh,” he said.

The chief minister pointed out that the Sri Venkateshwara College in Delhi is being managed by the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD), which manages the famous Lord Venkateshwara temple on Tirumala hills.

However, as per the University Grants Commission (UGC) order of 2009, state varsities cannot operate colleges beyond their respective state' territorial jurisdiction. So, Jagan wants this order to be relaxed so that Sri Venkateswara College can be run as an off-campus college of Andhra University in New Delhi.

This has angered the Delhi University students, who said if the college was affiliated to Andhra University, they would lose the opportunity to get seats through merit in the entrance test.
