Capital shift: CJ recuses from hearing in SC

The Supreme Court on Monday deferred the hearing on special leave petition filed by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government seeking lifting of status quo on capital shift to Wednesday.

The case came up before a division bench headed by chief justice S A Bobde. However, one of the counsels Ranjith Kumar brought to the notice of the court that some of the relatives of the chief justice were arguing the case on behalf of the farmers.

On coming to know about it, chief justice S A Bobde announced that he was recusing himself from the hearing and ordered that the registrar of the Supreme Court transfer the case to some other bench. The hearing was deferred to Wednesday.

It may be mentioned that the state high court had twice stayed the three capitals formation and abolition of AP Capital Region Development Authority and ordered that the status quo on Amaravati as the capital region be continued till August 27.

The Jagan government moved the Supreme Court challenging the high court order and seeking that the status quo on the capital shift be removed immediately.

The case will now come up before another bench on Wednesday.
