Andhra Pradesh to get new districts in January?

The Andhra Pradesh government is preparing to finalise the reorganisation of districts; expanding the current number from 26 to 32; most probably in January in line with the promises made during the elections.

A cabinet sub-committee has already initiated deliberations, and preliminary proposals for new districts and mandal boundaries are reportedly ready.

According to sources, under the new proposal, six new districts - Palasa, Amaravati, Markapuram, Gudur, Madanapalle, and Rajampet - are expected to be created, though minor changes could be made before the final notification.

The exercise may also involve shifting district headquarters and realigning revenue divisions. Significantly, Amaravati, the proposed capital region, is likely to be designated as a separate district.

Revenue authorities have been instructed to prepare detailed reports to facilitate the restructuring.

Officials from Nellore and Bapatla districts have been directed to submit proposals for merging the Kandukur and Addanki assembly constituencies with Prakasam district, while Ongole will continue as its headquarters.

The demand to reattach Kandukur and Addanki - which were split into Nellore and Bapatla districts during the YSRCP regime - has been longstanding.

People’s representatives and civic organisations have been urging the government to keep them within Prakasam district.

A new Markapuram district is expected to emerge as part of the reorganisation, while the remaining Prakasam district will retain Ongole, Addanki, and Kandukur segments.

According to sources, the final blueprint of the district reorganisation is expected to be placed before the Cabinet in January 2026, paving the way for official notification soon after.
