For the past three years, Telugu Desam Party president N Chandrababu Naidu has been wearing a platinum ring on the index finger of his left hand.
He was first seen with the ring in July 2022 during a three-day tour of his home district, Chittoor.
When some party workers asked Naidu — then the leader of the opposition — about the significance of the ring, he explained that it contained a computer chip that helps him maintain a healthy lifestyle by monitoring his sleep, heart rate, and other health parameters.
“Many such devices are now available to help people lead healthier lives, and I urge all TDP functionaries to use such modern gadgets,” Naidu said.
He claimed that the ring had helped him stay fit and youthful even in his 70s, adding that he strictly follows its recommendations.
Much like smartwatches, these rings can track steps, calories burned, and distance traveled. They monitor sleep — not just duration but also quality — track pulse rate, and some advanced models even measure blood oxygen levels. They also aid in stress management.
Additionally, these rings can be used for phone calls, messages, answering calls, and even contactless payments. Some models can control smart home devices as well.
Inspired by Naidu, TDP cadres embraced the trend, turning the ring into a fashion statement. Meanwhile, YSRCP supporters mocked it on social media.
However, many believed the ring had a touch of mysticism, as Naidu’s political fortunes took a dramatic upturn after he started wearing it — culminating in his return to power with a thumping majority in the 2024 elections.
Interestingly, during a press conference on Thursday, YSR Congress Party president Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy was also seen wearing a similar platinum ring—this time on the middle finger of his right hand.
Jagan had never been seen wearing rings or wristbands in the past, which has sparked speculation: Does Jagan have health issues, or has he begun to believe in luck and smart health devices?
Lately, Jagan has appeared tired and dull, and his face seems to have lost the charm he once had during his five-year tenure.
“In some ways, he looks as worn out as he did during his padayatra days,” a party leader observed.
It’s possible that doctors advised him to wear the smart ring to monitor his health. Like Naidu, Jagan reportedly follows a disciplined regimen, consuming healthy food in small portions and adhering strictly to his medication schedule.
Now in his 50s, Jagan must also pay close attention to his health.
“Since he is determined to return to power, maintaining good health is essential. Wearing a smart ring might be part of that effort,” sources added.
